Rock star hopefuls flock to USAA's U-TURN Garage Band Playoff

garageband screengrabU-TURN’s fourth annual Garage Band Playoff competition, designed and produced by Toolbox for financial
services leader USAA, received a record number of entries this summer.

Over 80 bands—each featuring a USAA member teen in the lineup—submitted entries at garagebandplayoff.com. This year, in the tradition of immortal songs like Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild,” and Rascal Flatts’ “Life is a Highway” Toolbox Studios and USAA teamed up to encourage teens to write, record and vote for The Next Great American Road Song. Toolbox delivered a custom-designed microsite which served double-duty: over the summer it served as an entry portal for would-be contestants, and this fall it will serve as a voting site for friends, family and fans.

USAA’s award-winning youth media brand, U-TURN, put out the call for original compositions that celebrate cars, driving, and the freedom of the open road. “Tying the competition to the driving theme helped us align it with one of USAA’s core businesses—auto insurance—but also presented some new challenges,” said U-TURN editor Roger Slavens. “The visually stunning, thematically clever microsite that Toolbox designed for the contest helped generate more buzz than ever, and at the same time made entry tracking and contest administration painless.”

The competition starts October 16, and the winner will be announced at the end of the year.
