AEP Awards spell success for Toolbox-designed U-TURN Magazine

"Academy Awards" of education publishing bestows national recognition on USAA Youth Media pub

WASHINGTON, DC -- U-TURN Magazine, the quarterly publication designed by Toolbox Studios for teens of United Services Automobile Association (USAA) members, took top honors at this year's annual award ceremony for the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP). Hosted each June in Washington D.C., the AEP Annual Awards Banquet and Gala recognizes the best in the educational publishing industry and has been described by AEP CEO Charlene Gaynor as the "Academy Awards of the Educational Publishing Industry."

U-TURN built upon its success in 2006 with Distinguished Achievement awards in two out of three categories in the Periodicals division. Additionally, U-TURN was a semi-finalist for the coveted Golden Lamp award, given to the best all-around publication. USAA Youth Media director Julie Finlay accepted the awards:

  • Distinguished Achievement Award: Design, Grades 9-12, "Art Cause: Gone to Ghana," U-TURN
  • Distinguished Achievement Award: Whole Publication, Grades 9-12, U-TURN

Paul Soupiset, Toolbox Studios creative director, said, "This is another great achievement for the team, and validates the work USAA and Toolbox have undertaken to make U-TURN a world-class periodical."

As the nation's largest privately-owned bank and insurance company, USAA has been serving military men and women and their families since 1922. USAA's Youth Publishing division turned to Toolbox in 2003 to redesign and re-adapt the publication to better resonate with its youth audience, and has since seen readership double.

Featuring articles from a teen-friendly point of view on issues like driving and getting into college, U-TURN has been recognized by both the educational publishing industry and youth market with top honors that include the Parent's Choice Recommended Seal, the Distinguished Achievement Seal from the International Association of Business Communicators, the IABC Gold Quill Award and a Gold ADDY.

U-TURN
Magazine is published four times a year for more than half a million teen USAA members and is a companion to a weekly audio podcast. USAA is a member-owned financial services company that provides a complete line of insurance, investment, banking and other services to millions of military personnel and their families worldwide.
